Wicked & Son of a Witch
Summary: This unique volume combines two modern classics spun from the imagination of national bestselling author Gregory Maguire. Wicked, told from the perspective of Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, gives the wildly entertaining prehistory of the Emerald City of Oz before the arrival of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Woodsman. The saga continues in Son of a Witch, the whimsical coming-of-age story of Liir, the Wicked Witch's secret son. Beautifully designed and illustrated, this volume makes the perfect gift for lovers of modern fantasy literature.

Wicked/Son of a Witch is part of Barnes & Noble’s series of quality leatherbound volumes. Each title in the series presents a classic work in an attractively designed edition bound in durable bonded leather. These books make elegant additions to any home library.

The Dark Is Rising: The Complete Sequence
Summary: Will Stanton's ordinary life is shattered with the dreadful revelation that the Dark — the source of all evil — is rising in its last and greatest bid to control the world. He finds that he is no ordinary boy, bit the last0born of the Old Ones, immortals dedicated to keeping mankind free from the Dark. Soon Will is swept up in the great battle, along with his ageless master, Merriman; the three Drew children, who are mortal but have their own vital part to play; and a strange albino boy named Bran. These six fight fear and death in a quest through time and space interwoven with the most ancient myths of the islands of Britain — until, at last, Will and Bran find the weapon that will ultimately vanquish the Dark.

One of the most celebrated fantasy sequences of all time, The Dark Is Rising is a searing, epic rendering of the eternal conflict between good and evil.

Low Red Moon
Summary: The only thing Avery Hood can remember about the night her parents died is that she saw silver—deadly silver, moving inhumanly fast. As much as she wants to remember who killed them, she can't, and there's nothing left to do but try to piece her life back together. Then Avery meets the new boy in school—Ben, mysterious and beautiful, with whom she feels a connection like nothing she's ever experienced. When Ben reveals he's a werewolf, Avery still trusts him—at first. Then she sees that sometimes his eyes flash inhuman silver. And she learns that she's not the only one who can't remember the night her parents died.Part murder mystery, part grief narrative, and part heart-stopping, headlong romance, Low Red Moon is a must-read for teen paranormal fans. As breathless as Twilight and as spooky as Shiver, this is a book to be devoured in one sitting—by an acclaimed YA author making her paranormal debut under the pseudonym Ivy Devlin.

Matched
Summary: Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

Hunger
Summary: "Thou art the Black Rider. Go thee out unto the world."

Lisabeth Lewis has a black steed, a set of scales, and a new job: she’s been appointed Famine. How will an anorexic seventeen-year-old girl from the suburbs fare as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?
Traveling the world on her steed gives Lisa freedom from her troubles at home—her constant battle with hunger, and her struggle to hide it from the people who care about her. But being Famine forces her to go places where hunger is a painful part of everyday life, and to face the horrifying effects of her phenomenal power. Can Lisa find a way to harness that power—and the courage to fight her own inner demons?
A wildly original approach to the issue of eating disorders, Hunger is about the struggle to find balance in a world of extremes, and uses fantastic tropes to explore a difficult topic that touches the lives of many teens.

Waitng on Wednesday: The Dark and Hollow Places

The Dark and Hollow Places (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #3)

The Dark and Hollow Places: The Forest of Hands and Teeth #3
Carrie Ryan
Young Adult
Mar. 22, 2011

I have not read the second book in this amazing series, but I did enjoy the first one. I haven't read many zombies books before, so to me this is a joy to look forward to. The characters in this first book where very well done and they showed a lot of emotion. I know they aren't sequels but companies to each other which I like a lot. I do look forward to reading the second book and the third.

From Goodreads:

There are many things that Annah would like to forget: the look on her sister’s face when she and Elias left her behind in the Forest of Hands and Teeth, her first glimpse of the horde as they found their way to the Dark City, the sear of the barbed wire that would scar her for life. But most of all, Annah would like to forget the morning Elias left her for the Recruiters.

Annah’s world stopped that day and she’s been waiting for him to come home ever since. Without him, her life doesn’t feel much different from that of the dead that roam the wasted city around her. Then she meets Catcher and everything feels alive again.
Except, Catcher has his own secrets -- dark, terrifying truths that link him to a past Annah’s longed to forget, and to a future too deadly to consider. And now it’s up to Annah -- can she continue to live in a world drenched in the blood of the living? Or is death the only escape from the Return’s destruction?

Book Review: NightShade by Andrea Cremer

Hello everyone! Today I finished reading NightShade by Andrea Cremer, which is the first book in her new series. The second book is called WolfsBane. Here is the review:

+++++
Plot:
Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything— including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

Review:
The cover alone makes the book amazing, but we all know that what  is inside really matters. Inside theses pages Cremer shows us a world of wolfs different then the ones we have all grown up read. In this world love doesn't matter and the one thing everyone cares about is surviving the next day. There is magic, blood, and forbidden passion that makes this book running. Calla is a fantastic main character. She is smart, fun, and a great fighter. There was a few problems with her that bothered me, but over all she was nice to read about. Shay was funny, smart, and serious all at once. He has some dark secrets that are left unanswered, that make this book even better. Finally there is Ren who throw out it all still cared about Calla and still loved her no matter what. In this book you could really tell the tension between all the characters and how much everyone just wants to be free. I give this book a 4/5.

Waitng on Wednesday: Awakened

Awakened: House of Night series #8
P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast
Young Adult
January 2011

I did enjoy the last book in this series called Burned, but Tempted (#6) was horrible and I am surprised I continued the series, but I am glad I did. I am looking forward to Awakened and I just love the cover. Many things happened in Burned that made me annoyed with the characters, but over all the book was better then the sixth. I do like this series in a way because it's different then most vampire series, but at times it's could make it not so dramatic. Still this book looks interesting and I am looking forward to reading more about Zoey and her "dramatic" problems.

From Barnes&Noble:

At the start of Awakened, the pulse-pounding eighth installment of the bestselling House of Night series, Zoey has returned, mostly whole, from the Otherworld to her rightful place as High Priestess at the House of Night. Her friends are just glad to have her back, but after losing her human consort, Heath, will Zoey—or her relationship with her super-hot Warrior, Stark—ever be the same? Stevie Rae is drawn even closer to Rephaim, the Raven Mocker with whom she shares a mysterious and powerful Imprint, but he is a dangerous secret that isolates her from her school, her red fledglings, and even her best friends. When the dark threat of Neferet—who is coming closer and closer to achieving her twisted goal of immortality—and Kalona returns, what will it take to keep the House of Night from being lost forever, and what will one desperate girl do to keep her heart from being irreparably broken?

Book Review: Misguided Angel by Melissa de la Cruz

Hello everyone! Today I finished reading Misguided Angel by Melissa de la Cruz, which is the fifth book in the Blue Blood series. If you haven't read the first four books in this series I would not continue readng this review. Here is the review:

~~~~~~
Plot: After inheriting the dark Vaen Alen Legacy, Schuyler fled ti Florence with her foribidden love, Jack. Now the two of them must embark on the mission Schuyler was destined to complete: to find and protect the five remaining gates that gaurd the earth from Lucifer, lord of the Silver Bloods.
Back in New York, Mimi has been elected Regent of the crumbling coven. Struggling with her heartache over the loss of Kingsley and with her overwhelming desire to destroy Jack, she must focus all her energy on a perilous new threat. Vampires are being abducted and their captors are planning to burn them alive online...for all the world to see. Help arrives in the form of Deming Chen, a Venator from Shanghai, who must untangle the web of deceptions before the killers strike again.
As the young vampires struggle for the survival of the coven, they uncover a deadly secret, a truth first discovered by Schuyler's mother during the Renaissance but kept buried for centuries. And as the Blue Blood enclave weakens yet further, fate leads Schuyler to a terrible choice that will ultimately map the destiny of her heart.
Review: For such a small book it did pack a lot of action. This book was good, but the last book was still better, since this one just didn't have that much information and was much smaller then the forth book. In the last book we know Schuyler and Jack leave New York to find the gates and not let Lucifer try to escape like he tried to do in book four. It was fun reading and Jack and Schuyler again with the relationship, but it also was the shortest story between all three vampires. Mimi's was the most interesting because of the problem with the kidnapping of the vampire and also with her rage, and grief eating her inside. Deming was a amazing character to read with her smart thinking and action fighting skills. I will be looking forward to reading more about her. I give this book a 4/5.
Anna knows her family is crazy. But when she goes to visit her aunt and uncle for the summer and learns that her uncle’s charred body has been found, her life reaches a new level of insanity. Her erratic aunt’s “psychic” abilities are exaggerated by her grief, and have become borderline violent. She desperately wants to trust Zack, the cute boy next door, but even he might know more about the incident than he is letting on.
But when Anna starts feeling an inexplicable pull to the site of her uncle’s murder, she begins to believe that her family’s supernatural gifts are real after all. Torn between loyalty and suspicion, Anna is certain of only one thing: she must discover who killed her uncle or she could be next….
Book Review: Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
Hello! Today I finished reading Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl, which is the second book in the Caster Chronicles. If you haven't read the first book Beautiful Creatures then you shouldn't continue reading. Here is the review:
**********
Plot: Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that has been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has maked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.
Sometimes life-ending.
Together Ethan and Lena can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.
Review: I am amazed that Kami and Margaret can make a book this good without messing it up. I love both Beautiful Creatures and Beautiful Darkness, but Beautiful Darkness had nothing boring and nothing was dragging in the story which I enjoyed. Everything was fast paced and amazing. You could truly tell the difference the characters are in the second book and how they developed as the problems became more hard and how deaths door was coming closer towards them. Ethan and Lena's relationship takes a turn for the worst and I even questioned myself if things would ever be the same between them as the story continued. The ending was filled with action and surprising answers to their problems. I give this book a 5/5 and now I am even more excited for the next book.
Invincible: Chronicles of Nick #2
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Young Adult
March 22, 2011
The first book in this series was amazing! I loved all the characters and the action was fantastic. Nick was such a funny, smart mouthed character to read about. It was confusing at times with what was going on since I didn't read the adult series she made before I read the first book, but I still enjoyed it. I can't wait to read more about Nick's background and his future.
From Goodreads:
Just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse...
Nick Gautier’s day just keeps getting better and better. Yeah, he survived the zombie attacks, only to wake up and find himself enslaved to a world of shapeshifters and demons out to claim his soul.
His new principal thinks he’s even more of a hoodlum than the last one, his coach is trying to recruit him to things he can’t even mention and the girl he’s not seeing, but is, has secrets that terrify him.
But more than that, he’s being groomed by the darkest of powers and if he doesn’t learn how to raise the dead by the end of the week, he will become one of them
"You're gettin' to be a tease, Lucille." Link squatted on his heels to scratch her ears. Lucille meowed, or growled, depending on how you looked at it. "Aw I forgive you." Everything was a compliment to Link.
In My Mailbox (8)
*In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren* In My Mailbox gives bloggers a chance to show each other
what books they got for the week. It's a very exciting and fun thing to do. Here is what I got for the week:
Bought/Review/Won:
Summary: Gabry lives a quiet life. As safe a life as is possible in a town trapped between a forest and the ocean, in a world teeming with the dead, who constantly hunger for those still living. She's content on her side of the Barrier, happy to let her friends dream of the Dark City up the coast while she watches from the top of her lighthouse. But there are threats the Barrier cannot hold back. Threats like the secrets Gabry's mother thought she left behind when she escaped from the Sisterhood and the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Like the cult of religious zealots who worship the dead. Like the stranger from the forest who seems to know Gabry. And suddenly, everything is changing. One reckless moment, and half of Gabry's generation is dead, the other half imprisoned. Now Gabry only knows one thing: she must face the forest of her mother's past in order to save herself and the one she loves.
Summary: A chronic illness shapes not only the awareness of the sufferer, but the dynamics of an entire family, a tactic cleverly used by frequent collaborators Burns and Metz to structure the plot of this vampire romance. Shay McGuire has been sick from birth with an undiagnosed blood disorder. Now 17, she longs for even enough normalcy to make it through a week of school. When her physician stepfather offers her a new kind of blood transfusion therapy, Shay is unprepared for the startling visions and unusual vitality that follow. During her spurts of energy, Shay acts out recklessly, until her mother demands a halt to the new treatment. Breaking into her stepfather's office, Shay finds a man chained to a table--a man she recognizes instantly from her visions. He is the source of her transfusions, and a vampire. Though not marketed as such, this volume is clearly first in a projected series, ending on a cliffhanger. Smoothly written and offering a thoughtful look at the very human reactions of "the Sick Girl," it's a promising entry in an overcrowded field.
Summary: Young Tabby Aykroyd has been brought to the dusty mansion of Seldom House to be nursemaid to a foundling boy. He is a savage little creature, but the Yorkshire moors harbor far worse, as Tabby soon discovers. Why do scores of dead maids and masters haunt Seldom House with a jealous devotion that extends beyond the grave?
As Tabby struggles to escape the evil forces rising out of the land, she watches her young charge choose a different path. Long before he reaches the old farmhouse of Wuthering Heights, the boy who will become Heathcliff has doomed himself and any who try to befriend him.
Summary: Considered lurid and shocking by mid-19th-century standards, Wuthering Heights was initially thought to be such a publishing risk that its author, Emily Bronte, was asked to pay some of the publication costs. A somber tale of consuming passions and vengeance played out against the lonely moors of northern England, the book proved to be one of the most enduring classics of English literature.
The turbulent and tempestuous love story of Cathy and Heathcliff spans two generations -- from the time Heathcliff, a strange, course young boy, is brought to live on the Earnshaw's windswept estate, through Cathy's marriage to Edgar Linton and Heathcliff's plans for revenge, to Cathy's death years later and the eventual union of the surviving Earnshaw and Linton heirs.
Summary: Sixteen-Year-Old Jace Witherspoon arrives at the doorstep of his estranged brother Christian with a re-landscaped face (courtesy of his father's fist), $3.84, and a secret.
He tries to move on, going for new friends, a new school, and a new job, but all his changes can't make him forget what he left behind--his mother, who is still trapped with his dad, and his ex-girlfriend, who is keeping his secret.
At least so far.
Worst of all, Jace realizes that if he really wants to move forward, he may first have to do what scares him most: He may have to go back. First-time novelist Swati Avasthi has created a riveting and remarkably nuanced portrait of what happens after. After you've said enough, after you've run, after you've made the split--how do you begin to live again? Readers won't be able to put this intense page-turner down.
